Visual condition assessment

VTI is very experienced in assessing the extent of the degradation of paved surfaces or roads due, for example, to heavy traffic, abrasion from studded tyres or poor drainage.

We make the assessment by carrying out a so-called visual condition assessment, where the causes of any damage along with the level of severity of a particular kind of damage are determined according to the handbook entitled "Bära eller brista – handbok i tillståndsbedömning av belagda gator och vägar" (Swedish, translates to "Bear or break – handbook on condition assessment for paved streets and roads", by Wågberg, Svenska Kommunförbundet, 2003).

If a more detailed study is needed, an extended analysis is made with the aid of a combination of road surface measurements, measurement of its ability to resist a load and laboratory analyses at our road material laboratory. Using this method, a complete picture emerges of the condition of the road in the degradation phase. Together with requirements for future functionality for e.g. traffic load, this information forms the basis for being able to make correct decisions regarding measures to be taken for achieving the desired level of traffic safety, accessibility, comfort and environmental protection.
