Road Marking – Mobile measurement system validation

Yearly, VTI administers a validation of mobile measuring equipment used for measuring functional parameters of road markings. The mobile measurements are compared with reference measurements of the functional parameters that are included in the validation, according to the method statement by the Swedish Transport Administration.

We perform validation of the following parameters:

• Retroreflectivity of dry road markings
• Retroreflectivity of wet road markings
• Luminance coefficient of dry road markings
• Friction of wet road markings.

Prior to the validation, a number of road marking objects is selected. The participating companies conduct measurements of functional parameters on several objects over the course of one day on dry road markings. In connection to the mobile measurements, reference measurements are performed by VTI using handheld instruments. The mobile measurements are to be carried out in accordance with the method statement TDOK 2013:0461, issued by the Swedish Transport Administration.
