Originally, the international conference “Road Safety on Two Continents” had an emphasis on two continents, Europe and North America, to bring together road safety researchers.

Conferences were held in Europe between 1987 and 1999 and then expanded to three continents in 2000 when the conference moved to South Africa.

A fourth continent, Asia, was added in 2007 when the conference was hosted in Thailand. In 2016 the conference was expanded to Brazil, South America, and is now called "Road Safety on Five Continents".

The conference attracts the international research community, national safety experts, decision makers, practitioners and other delegates with an interest in road safety development.

In October 2022, the latest RS5C conference took place in Grapevine, Texas, USA.
