Analysis and modeling of passenger behavior, traffic flow, travel patterns, etc. are strongly linked to the collection, processing and analysis of various types of data sources. VTI uses statistical and AI methods to analyze large amounts of data related to travel demand, driving behavior and traffic flows from data collection techniques such as mobile network data, GPS, AIS, video and radar.

VTI plans the collection of, as well as processes and analyzes data from various types of data sources for road traffic, railway traffic, shipping and aviation. Both traditional and more advanced statistical methods such as machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are used for processing and analysis.

Collected data is used for development, calibration and validation of various types of traffic and transport models; as a basis for design and evaluation of various traffic management strategies; development of empirically based traffic engineering relationships; as well as analysis of accessibility, environmental impact and traffic safety.

Examples of project areas:

  • Analysis of pedestrian (walking, cycling, vehicle drivers, etc.) behavior and interactions based on motion trajectories extracted from video measurements.
  • Analysis of driving behavior based on data from instrumented vehicles.
  • Analysis of capacity and traffic processes based on flows, speeds, vehicle lengths, and time gaps from radar and loop measurements.
  • Analysis of mode choice based on data extracted from antenna positions in the mobile network.
  • Analysis of route choice based on GPS positions from mobile applications.
  • Analysis of train movements and flows based on data from the railway system.
  • Analysis of ship movements based on AIS data.
