Crash Safety, Measurement Technology and Engineering

VTI's Crash safety, measurement technology and mechanical workshop unit carries out tests of child car seats and other equipment, works with measurement technology investigations and manages VTI’s technical infrastructure.

The crash safety laboratory consists of two crash tracks; an indoor track and an outdoor track. On the outdoor track, it is possible to build large traffic environments with road equipment to carry out tests, also with heavy vehicles. The tests of child car seats are carried out both as basic tests and as so-called Plus tests.

The unit also carries out tests that are not accredited. This may, for example, apply to tests of various types of intrusion protection and crash tests with motorhomes, A-tractors, bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles.

The employees at the mechanical workshop develop and maintain VTI's technical equipment. The workshop works with both external and internal assignments and is a so-called prototype workshop that can manufacture custom parts and equipment. Examples of work include VTI's driving simulators, VTI's tire testing facility, friction measurement equipment and testing equipment for road engineering and geotechnical laboratories.

The employees who work with measurement technology develop and manufacture measurement equipment and carry out field measurements and collect various types of data. This can include, for example, test loads, friction measurements, stresses from heavy traffic and the effects of temperature and frost. Many investigations are carried out with various sensors in the road structure.

The unit has 15 employees who are technicians and engineers and work in Linköping.
