Magnus Berglund is Head of Research at the Traffic Analysis and Logistics unit at VTI. The unit is one of the largest within the institute and conducts research and development at system level within four main areas:

  • Applied logistics
  • Modelling of transport and traffic systems
  • Digitalisation
  • Electrification

Magnus is also responsible for VTI’s strategic initiative in northern Sweden, where we have started with a focus on research at the intersection between transport/transport systems and energy systems (E-Mobility) by being a partner in what is called ACE (Arctic Centre of Energy). In addition, we have achieved success in the field of autonomy, with several major projects on autonomous vehicles – both on land and in the air, including drone technology.

The overall goal within all research areas of the unit is to contribute knowledge and expertise for a long-term sustainable and competitive transport supply.

Transport supply is central to ensuring that society’s logistics and mobility systems function well, and knowledge is needed on how we can better plan, manage and design our transport flows.

We have always been interested in disruptions in transport systems, but now we are focusing more on disruptions that affect society. Resilience, preparedness and the consequences of climate change are highly topical. Electrification and future energy supply involve major challenges – and opportunities – particularly regarding charging infrastructure and the development of hydrogen and other energy carriers.

Magnus holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and Management and earned his PhD in Logistics Management, focusing on logistics companies’ strategies and value-creating processes. He has broad experience from both academia and industry, as a researcher, teacher, consultant and line manager.
