VTI research engineer Claudia Bratu works within the Operations and Maintenance division, specialising in Road Surface Measurement. She has been employed at VTI since 2020 and is based at the organisation’s head office in Linköping.
Claudia holds an MSc in Engineering Physics and Electrical Engineering from Linköping University. In her work at VTI, she focuses on the analysis of road surface data, with particular emphasis on understanding and describing road conditions and how they develop over time. She works with VTI’s advanced road surface measurement vehicle, the Mobile Research Platform (MRP), which combines traditional road surface measurements with modern mobile mapping technology, including lidar. An important part of her work also involves analysing and processing data from Pavement Management Systems (PMS), which are used to support the planning and monitoring of road maintenance.
What is particularly exciting at the moment is the rapid technological development within our field, which is giving us the opportunity to carry out broader and more advanced analyses than has previously been possible.”
Claudia contributes to both research projects and applied projects, such as commissioned assignments and collaborations with industry partners. Her work ranges from analysing road data and developing new metrics and methods to contributing to technical requirements and conducting technical tests. A central aspect of her work is producing knowledge that can support improved assessment and management of road infrastructure.
Her strengths lie in data analysis, with particular expertise in programming and the handling of spatial data, including GIS. By combining technical analysis with a systems perspective, she contributes to the development of more data-driven and efficient approaches to road maintenance.
In summary, Claudia works at the intersection of measurement technology, data analysis and infrastructure management, with the aim of developing methods and requirements that maximise the lifespan of roads through improved decision-making data and maintenance strategies.

Structural condition of roads
A project providing decision support to the Swedish and Finnish Transport Administrations on strategies for mapping the structural capacity of the national road network, an area where information is currently lacking.
