Jesper Sandin works as a senior researcher in traffic accidents, road safety and road user behaviour. He received his PhD in vehicle safety at Chalmers University of Technology in 2008, where he developed a method for analysing the causes of vehicle accidents, investigated in-depth. During his doctoral studies, he was also involved in establishing the first accident analysis team at Chalmers.

Through participation in national and international research projects, Jesper has acquired both deep and broad knowledge of accident causes, driver behaviour, crash safety and personal injury mechanisms – knowledge that he has further developed within his research at VTI.

Road safety combines two of my largest interests: human behaviour and technology. It is in the interaction between them that the most interesting questions – and solutions – are found."

For several years, Jesper has worked on developing and evaluating test scenarios for collision avoidance systems, for application in VTI's advanced driving simulators, both for passenger cars and heavy trucks.

Much of Jesper’s research has focused on road safety for heavy trucks, in particular how road safety is affected by truck combinations that are heavier than 64 tonnes and/or longer than 25.25 metres – so-called HCT (High Capacity Transport). Since 2013, he has led the HCT Road Safety work package within the national HCT programme. The goal of the work package is to produce knowledge and decision-making support for the implementation of HCT on parts of the Swedish road network through research, development and demonstration.

In recent years, Jesper has also worked with issues regarding how traffic safety may be affected by automated driving systems (ADS), especially for heavy truck combinations.
