Drivers report risky moments when overtaking cyclists

We’ve got the first results from our survey on overtaking behaviour – and they show that many drivers report situations that could have been safer.
A total of 1,000 drivers who regularly travel on rural roads took part in the survey.
- 31% said they had overtaken unsafely when cyclists were riding side by side.
- 12% admitted to getting impatient after waiting behind a cyclist.
- 7% said they overtook in poor conditions, such as bends, hills or low visibility.
- Another 7% had overtaken even when queues had formed behind them.
The survey was carried out by If Insurance within the ComCy project, which explores how overtaking is experienced by vulnerable road users. The aim is to support safer driving behaviour and provide useful input for driver training, health, accessibility and environmental improvements.
