Welcome to attend the RS5C 2025 events! The events are optional, and you can select which ones to attend when you register.
Welcome to Virtuocity, a centre for city simulation!
As part of the RS5C 2025 conference, you will have the opportunity to visit Virtuocity by taking part in a technical tour of the University of Leeds research facility.
Three tours will take place on 2 September at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:00. The tour takes approximately 1.5 hours.
Availability is on a first come first serve basis. If you would like to attend, indicate your participation when you register for the conference.
This session will cover the fundamentals of reproducible data science for road safety research, building on a decade's worth of experience working with road traffic casualty datasets for policy-relevant road safety research.
The UK's open access STATS19 database will be the basis of the session but the skills learned will be applicable to any road safety datasets. The session will cover:
- Importing collision, casualty and vehicle tables
- Temporal visualisation and aggregation
- Spatial visualisation and aggregation
- Joining STATS19 tables
- Spatial joins linking infrastructure to collisions
The session will build on the following resources that may be worth taking a read of before signing-up:
- Geocomputation with R (2025), and the transport chapter in particular
- A paper exploring the spatial distribution of cycling casualties in West Yorkshire, using exploratory data analysis (EDA) techniques (Lovelace et al. 2016)
- A paper exploring social inequalities in cycling casualties nationwide (Vidal-Tortosa et al. 2021)
The session will be held on 2 September between 13.00–16.00 at the Institute for Transport Studies, on the University of Leeds Campus. Room 1.1.

You will need to preregister for this event. The workshop is an optional choice when you register for the conference. Lunch is included, an additional fee of £50 will be charged for this event.
Celebrate the start of the RS5C 2025 conference by joining us at the Welcome Reception!
The reception will be held on 2 September between 17:00–18:00 at Cloth Hall Court (the conference venue).
The reception serves as an initial get-together for social networking in a relaxed atmosphere. It also gives the participants the opportunity to register early for the conference as well as familiarise themselves with the conference venue.
We welcome all participants to join and enjoy good finger food and refreshments.
Participation is free but you need to indicate your participation when you register for the conference.
Networking and enjoying delicious food at the conference dinner!
The conference dinner will be held on 4 September at the Leeds Marriott Hotel near the conference venue. The evening begins with a drink reception between 19:30–20:00 followed by dinner at 20:00. The event ends at midnight.
The dinner offers conference participants an excellent opportunity to enjoy delicious food while getting to know each other and making new connections outside the main conference environment.
