Logistics & freight transport
Logistics is a central function that enables a functioning society, strengthens the competitiveness of the business sector, and contributes to Sweden’s role on the global stage.
Logistics fundamentally aims to ensure that the right products are in the right place at the right time. This makes logistics a key function that is essential for the functioning of society, a competitive business sector, and Sweden’s position in the global market.
Logistics research is more than just transport
Logistics involves planning, managing, and coordinating activities and actors within material flows, together with the associated information and financial flows. Freight transport refers specifically to the movement of goods, but logistics encompasses much more. It includes operational elements, such as warehousing, transshipment, and order handling, as well as strategic aspects, such as the design of supply chains and collaboration between actors.
The research focuses on developing and implementing competitive, efficient, resilient, and sustainable logistics and freight transport solutions. It also examines how societal trends, new technologies, and policy decisions affect the actors involved in logistics and freight transport.
Research often takes its starting point from the actors in the freight system: goods owners in industry and commerce who create demand for freight transport; transport and logistics companies that move materials and products; and infrastructure actors who provide shipping routes, roads, railways, and terminals.
Our research is divided into five focus areas:
- Fossil-free logistics solutions
- Resilience in freight transport systems
- Long-term transport and energy efficiency
- Circular logistics
- Urban logistics, e-commerce, and city freight transport
