Pavement design models for roads
Good and sustainable economy is essential when it comes to build, manage, operate and maintain roads. How the road structure is designed has a significant impact on this.
Road structures are deteriorated, among other things due to repeated loading of the heavy vehicle and influence of climatic factors. Unlike most other structures, roads are designed to a certain deterioration limit and then rebuilt. An important part of VTI's research in this area is to improve understanding of both the behavior and the deterioration of road structure.
Estimation of response to traffic loading, Erapave
VTI has developed the calculation program Erapave, Elastic Response Analysis of Pavement, based on the MLET (MultiLayer Elastic Theory). The program calculates the response of road structures to traffic loading. The software allows structures to be analyzed as linear elastic layer or non-linear elastic (unbound) layer.

VTI has developed PEDRO, PErmanent Deformation of asphalt concrete layer for Roads (version 1.10, January 2019), a viscoelastic uni-layer model for prediction of rutting components (post-compaction and shear rutting) in bituminous pavement layers subjected to traffic loading. Vehicles characteristics such as axle load configuration, speed, tyre-pavement interaction and influence of lateral displacement of traffic take into consideration to estimate rut development as a function of number of load applications (or pavement age at defined yearly traffic volume). The PEDRO model utilizes the viscosity of bituminous materials, hourly measured traffic and climate data, and the geometry of the pavement structure.
