How can digital simulation help us measure real-world pollution in our cities?

As part of the European project LIFE NEEVE, the RDT team is leading the aerodynamic modelling tasks to support the design of next-generation measurement systems for non-exhaust particulate emissions (from brakes, tyres, and road surfaces).

We cannot accurately measure what we don't fully understand. That’s why, using Advanced CFD Simulation, we are replicating the vehicle’s airflow across two critical scenarios:

Component level: Studying the complex physics inside the brake enclosure in high detail to optimize the capture of brake wear emissions.

Vehicle level: Analyzing external aerodynamics and the airflow directly behind the tyre, where the interaction with the pavement and the tyres are key.

Thanks to these simulations, we are able to identify the ideal location for the NEE sensors, optimizing design resources and ensuring maximum accuracy for upcoming real-world testing.
