The government appointed Mattias Viklund as the new Director General of the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute on Thursday. Mattias Viklund most recently served as Director General of Trafikanalys.

Mattias Viklund will take up the post on 1 July and will succeed Tomas Svensson, whose appointment as Director General comes to an end after nine years.

“Mattias Viklund has extensive and solid experience of working in government agencies with both transport and research issues, which will be of great benefit in his role as Director-General of the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute. Research in the transport sector is of considerable importance, and I am very pleased that Mattias Viklund has accepted the role of leading and developing the agency’s work,” said Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, Andreas Carlson.

Mattias Viklund is 54 years old and has served as Director General of Trafikanalys since 2019. Before that, he worked at VTI as Head of Department and Deputy Director-General. He holds a PhD in Economics from the Stockholm School of Economics and, in addition to his roles at Trafikanalys and VTI, has held several other positions within the public sector.

“The programme declaration will have to wait a little, but I would already like to emphasise the tremendous opportunities that exist within this research institute. Together with all staff, I want to work to raise VTI’s profile even further and ensure that research is applied where it is truly needed,” he said when he was introduced as the new Director General at VTI’s headquarters in Linköping.
