VTI, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, has been involved in research projects in northern Sweden for many years. VTI is increasing its involvement with the strong expansion in the region and will be represented at Campus Skellefteå. In connection with this, VTI is also becoming a programme partner of the Arctic Center of Energy, ACE, commencing a new partnership with Luleå University of Technology.

In times of great social transformation, mobility and logistics are critical to success. VTI has more than a century of experience of research and development. By being part of ACE, the centre of excellence for electrification, VTI is able to make a clearer contribution to a region that is in major need of research and development in respect of these issues. VTI is currently recruiting a researcher with coordination responsibility who will be based at Campus Skellefteå and develop the business going forward.

“Our engagement in northern Sweden will be focusing on solutions that integrate transport systems with energy and power systems. But VTI has a broad research programme and perceives opportunities to make contributions in other areas as well. This is just the beginning,” says Magnus Berglund, Head of Research at VTI.

“ACE welcomes VTI as a strategic partner. VTI brings both breadth and depth to the field of mobility. Together, we will be conducting research and innovation projects that not only reinforce the green transition in northern Sweden, but also have the potential to be scaled up and applied on a global level,” says Tobias Vahlne, Operations Manager at ACE.

Working in partnership with Luleå University of Technology, VTI will also be appointing a doctoral student who will spend four years studying bidirectional vehicle charging and its impact on electricity distribution networks as part of the Swedish Energy Agency’s research programme Framtidens elsystem (Electricity Systems of the Future).

Recruitment is set to commence immediately, and VTI expects to be its initiative in northern Sweden to be in full swing by June next year.

“VTI has set its sights on establishing a stronger presence in northern Sweden, with a central base in the expanding Skellefteå region. We want to build and further develop strategic relationships with key stakeholders and partners in the region so that we can ensure successful partnerships in the field of electromobility,” says Åsa Aretun, Staff Director at VTI.
