EU project on gender equality and diversity in the transport sector: TInnGO

The TInnGO (Transport Innovation Gender Observatory) project 2019–2021 addressed gender and diversity and transportation and contributed with new knowledge to current transport and mobility developments in Europe by:

  • Focusing on intersectional perspectives, for example, related to socio economic and cultural aspects, in combination with gender, class, ethnicity, and age particularly in relation to smart and sustainable mobility.
  • By creating gender and diversity awareness and action plans (GaDAP) which can be translated into different cultural contexts to develop gender and diversity sensitive smart mobility as a fundamental component of a smart city.

TInnGO had a unique comparative approach enabling contributions from researchers and stakeholders from 13 European countries in 10 hubs: Denmark/Sweden, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and the UK. The hubs were organized around local contexts and addressed gender and diversity in relation to local problems. These employed qualitative and quantitative research methods, combining hands-on knowledge, concrete actions, and best practices to develop gender and diversity sensitive smart mobilities and solutions through Living Lab workshops and networking.

TInnGO developed a methodology for intersectional analysis and planning called Gender and Diversity Action Planning – GaDAP. The argument for this was that planning, organising, maintaining, and using the transport system are all gendered, while also intersecting with other social positions. This means that without an intersectional gender perspective, in which the gender perspective is combined with other considerations such as age, ethnicity, functional variation, education, and socioeconomic status, actions and measures will not be able to meet the various needs and interests of different social groups. To support the process with GaDAP, TInnGO has identified five overarching dimensions that together capture areas that need to be taken into account in planning and implementation: affordable, effective, attractive, sustainable and inclusive.

The results were disseminated, among other things, through 11 policy briefs. The researchers have also published reports, articles and conference papers. An important part of TInnGO was to continuously disseminate experiences and communicate digitally during the work process via the TInnGO Observatory External link. and offer interactive knowledge development, among other things in the form of an interactive training material External link.. The website lives on after the project period (but is not updated as often) and there are also links to TInnGO's data repository, publications, the hubs' subprojects and project results.
