With decades of experience VTI is world leading in developing and using driving simulators. At the moment three driving simulators are in use in different research projects concerning cars and lorries. The same technique as in VTI:s driving simulators can be applied in the rail area. VTI has developed a rail simulator that can simulate a train driver's work environment. The simulator can be built as a complex solution with a cabin as well as desktop or lap-top installation, depending on the planned usage.
The rail simulator can be used in marketing events to show how to drive a train, but it can also be used for education of train drivers. At VTI, the train simulator is used to conduct behavioural research studies focusing on education and training as well as human-machine interaction.
At present VTI's studies are focused on studies regarding energy efficient driving, and also the drivers' experience with signaling systems ATC, STM and ERTMS/ETCS.
Three simulated Swedish rail tracks are available:
- Malmö – Peberholm (ATC)
- Härnösand – Västeraspby (ERTMS)
- Falköping – Jönköping – Forserum (ATC)
Along the simulated tracks signalling, signs and stations are modelled to correspond with reality. The simulated train match the Regina train (X55). Modelling of freight trains is underway.
All the software has been developed by VTI and can be offered to professional users.
