Understanding the individual’s behaviour in the transport system is at the core of VTI’s research. Driving simulators offer a unique environment to study human-machine interaction. This is why VTI has been using driving simulators since the 1960s.

VTIs lab facilities are outstanding, comprising three state-of-the-art driving simulators, one smaller driver training simulator and one simulator for rail bound traffic. The facilities are open-research environments, and characterised by the use of in-house developed and open-source code enabling total freedom to design experiments.
VTI has more than 40 years of experience of using simulators and is a leading authority in conducting simulator experiments and developing simulator technology. In the last few years the use of advanced driving simulators for a more effective product development has gained much attention. VTI is leading the VINNOVA financed competence centre VIP which focuses on this topic.
