Malmö is situated in the southern part of Sweden on the coastline of Skåne county and is now connected to Copenhagen in Denmark through the Öresund bridge. Malmö is thought to have been founded in the year 1275, as a fortified quay or ferry berth of the Archbishop of Lund, some 20 kilometres to the north-east. Its original name was Malmhaug meaning "Gravel pile".
Malmö has recently had an impressive architectural development. The building on the picture is Turning Torso, deigned by the spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The 54 story building, the tallest building in Scandinavia, opened 2005. /Photo: Johan Edgren/
